The Fatherly Love of God | Psalm 103:13-14

As we conclude our journey through Psalm 103, we come to one of the most comforting truths about God's love: its fatherly nature. Today, we'll explore how God's love for us is not distant or impersonal, but intimately paternal.

Wisdom of the Day

"When you really see Jesus, I defy you to doubt Him. When He says, 'Let not your heart be troubled,' if you see Him I defy you to trouble your mind; it is a moral impossibility to doubt when He is there."

Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest.

Psalm 103:13-14
"As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust."

David draws a beautiful parallel here between an earthly father's love and God's love for us. But God's fatherly love far surpasses even the best human father. His compassion is perfect, His understanding complete. "He knows our frame," David says. God isn't surprised by our weaknesses or frustrated by our limitations. He remembers that we are dust – fragile, finite creatures. Yet in His love, He doesn't despise our weakness; He meets us in it.

This fatherly love of God is transformative. We're no longer slaves cowering in fear, but beloved children welcomed into intimate relationship. Romans 8:15 tells us we've received "the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'" Abba is an Aramaic term of endearment, like a son calling his father "Daddy."

Have you grasped that the holy and infinite God of the universe invites us to call Him by such an intimate name? This is not to trivialize God’s nature, but to emphasize the intimacy and tenderness of His love for us.

God’s fatherly love is constant and unwavering. Unlike human love that can be fickle or conditional, God's love for His children is "from everlasting to everlasting" (v.17). It doesn't depend on our performance but on His unchanging character.

Friends, whatever your earthly experience of fatherhood has been – good, bad, or absent – know that you have a perfect Father in heaven who loves you deeply and knows you intimately.
