The Delight of the Godly: Psalm 1:1-2

I'm Jonny, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to our inaugural Dial in Devotional! Thank you for joining me on this exciting new journey.

At Dial In Ministries, our passion is that God's people would be immersed in God's Word. We've started these daily devotionals in hopes to ground your day in the precious and timeless truths of scripture (3x per week... for now).

We're kicking off with the book of Psalms, a rich treasury of insights for every season of life. It's particularly fitting that we begin with Psalm 1:1-2, which speaks directly to the heart of our endeavor—meditating on Scripture. As we dive into this passage, I invite you to approach it with an open mind and heart, ready to receive fresh insights from these timeless words.

Quote of the Day:

"Meditation is the hammer that shatters hallo christianity. We need this. You cannot delight in God unless you meditate upon the truth he has given to us in His word. To meditate is to “personally, practically, seriously, and earnestly” examine the truth of the Bible and then determine what that means for our lives and ask that God would bend our wills and conform our affections accordingly."

The Delight of the Godly

Psalm 1:1-2
"How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night."

In a world constantly vying for our attention, the psalmist paints a striking contrast. On one side, we see a progression of ungodliness - walking, standing, sitting - each step drawing us deeper into worldly influence. On the other, we find a man whose heart beats with an entirely different rhythm.

This blessed man doesn't just avoid evil; he actively pursues good. His delight - his deepest joy and satisfaction - is found in God's Word. This isn't a reluctant duty or a mundane task. It's a feast for his soul, a treasure he can't help but explore day and night.

Meditation here isn't a passive activity. It's more akin to a cow chewing its cud - thoroughly processing, digesting, and drawing sustenance from every morsel of truth. This man turns God's Word over in his mind, examining it from every angle, allowing it to permeate his thoughts and transform his heart.

In our fast-paced, information-saturated world, such devoted meditation might seem impractical or outdated. Yet, it's precisely this deep, consistent engagement with Scripture that shapes a life of true blessedness. It's not about perfection, but direction - consistently turning our hearts toward God's truth rather than the world's fleeting wisdom.

Reflection Questions:

1. Do you want the Bible’s picture of the happy man? Recall a time when you genuinely delighted in God's Word. What was different about your approach or circumstances that made it a delight rather than a duty?

2. Consider your daily routine. Where do you see the "counsel of the wicked" or the "path of sinners" subtly influencing your thoughts or decisions? How can you intentionally replace these influences with God's wisdom?

Write this on your heart:

If God's Word is not my delight, I will find delight in the fleeting things of this world.
