This message works through Titus 3:1–8 and how believers are to live in a world that is often hostile to them. Paul's instruction is strikingly concrete: be subject to rulers and authorities, be ready for every good deed, malign no one, be peaceable and gentle, showing every consideration for all people.
The reason he gives is the gospel itself. We ourselves were once foolish and disobedient — “but when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy.” Christian conduct in a hostile world flows not from moral superiority or sheer effort, but from mercy already received.
