"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."
He doesn't say He's a way. He says He's the way. Not a door—the door. Not a truth—the truth. Not a life—the life. And outside of Him this morning, you may be breathing, you may be existing, but you're not alive.
Scripture Focus: John 14:6; Ephesians 2:13-14; Luke 15:4-6
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."
"But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall."
What does it mean that Jesus says He is the way?
Well, He is telling you that you are a pilgrim. You are on your way from this world to somewhere else. This is one of the most self-evident realities in this life. You have no permanence in this world. Time marches on. Gravity wins. And Hebrews 9:27 says, "It is appointed once for man to die, and then comes judgment."
In a hundred years, every single person reading these words will be dead.
But when Jesus says He is the way, not only is He referring to the reality that we are pilgrims, but that mankind is lost. Lost in sin. This is a message the modern man does not like to hear. Man doesn't have a side relationship with sin. Sin is a harsh master. They don't know the way. Man does not know the way. They're lost.
In Luke 15, Jesus provides three consecutive parables to display the human condition. A lost sheep. A lost coin. A lost son. Trapped in bondage, stumbling and fumbling around. They don't even know where to go.
Lost sheep don't find shepherds. They continue to wander until they die.
And Jesus says, "I'm the way. Follow Me."
How does He make this way? Ephesians 2:13-14: "But now in Christ Jesus, you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall."
When God made the world, He made man in perfect harmony and fellowship with Himself. That's why He made man in His image—not just to observe and spectate, but to dwell with them in friendship. But when sin entered the world, it disrupted that fellowship. And now those who were made to rush into the presence of God are running from the presence of God, hiding themselves in the bushes and trees that God had made.
Mankind is alienated and separated from God. And they're looking for a way without even knowing what they're looking for.
Jesus says, "I am the way." He is the only one that can bridge the great gulf and massive chasm between you and God.
You're not almost to God outside of Him. You are separated—eternally separated—under the judgment of God right now.
But Jesus says, "I am the way." Follow Him.
