I Am the Truth

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life."

He doesn't just give truth. He doesn't just know truth. He doesn't just have truth. He is the truth.

Wisdom of the Day: "Truth is not depersonal. Truth is a person, a relational being named Jesus." – Jonny Ardavanis
Scripture Focus: John 14:6; John 1:14; Romans 1:18-20

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life."

"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."

In saying that Jesus is the truth, He is acknowledging a certain reality about you.

What's that?

That you are a rational creature.

You were made in the image of God. Not just to feel things, but to think and to grapple.

You have inside of you a restlessness—an insatiable appetite for truth. If you put your phone down long enough, if you turn off the screen long enough, the default position of the human mind is to wonder toward what happens when we die. This is why deep philosophy comes out of contemplation.

You maybe mask this, suppress this - because of the inundation of distraction. The average person spends seven hours a day looking at a screen. We don't really have time to think. And busyness mutes your ability to ponder.

But here's the thing. Even though people suppress it, deep down they know truth is not subjective. Even in a world where people say "speak your truth," people know at the soul level that there is something objective and firm and concrete and not malleable that they're longing for.

The questions that probe in the heart of man are these: What are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?

And Jesus says, "I am the truth."

If you want to discover the truth about God, the truth about man, why we're so broken, why this world is so full of sorrow and sadness, the truth about salvation and how we're reconciled to God—Jesus says, "I am the truth." He doesn't just give truth. He doesn't just know truth. He is truth.

When Jesus says that He is the truth, He also means that He is reliable and sure. You can trust Him.

And one other thing. When Jesus says that He is the truth, He details the reality that truth is not depersonal. Truth is a person—a relational being named Jesus.

Sometimes people say, "I just want to know the truth. I just want the facts." And they think that fact is an answer on a sheet of paper, a multiple-choice quiz. Truth is not depersonal. Truth is the person of Jesus Christ.

Reflection Questions:

When did you last turn off the noise long enough to genuinely ask the deep questions: What am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going?

Are you looking for truth as a concept or as a person?

Do you trust Jesus—not just what He says, but who He is?

Write this on your heart: I don't just want true facts. I want the Truth. Truth is not a concept. Truth is a person—Jesus Christ.
