God didn't just promise His presence to Israel—He gave them crystal-clear guidance. Today we'll examine what it means to follow the Light rather than stumble in our own darkness.
Numbers 9:22-23 "Whether it was two days or a month or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, staying above it, the sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out; but when it was lifted, they did set out. At the command of the Lord they camped, and at the command of the Lord they set out; they kept the Lord's charge, according to the command of the Lord through Moses."
Two days. A month. A year. Sometimes the cloud would settle over the camp from morning until evening, then move—which meant pack everything up and move. Sometimes it would stay for years. The Israelites learned a profound lesson: you stay in the presence of God because the presence of God is your guide.
In the desert, there were very few identifiable landmarks. There were also enemies all around. How were they supposed to find their way? God gave them crystal-clear direction: you go where the light goes. Where the light doesn't go, you do not go.
Can I ask you something? Is that true of your own life? Do you refuse to take a step, make a decision, make a move apart from the guidance of your Shepherd? For God's people, it was understood: we do not know what to do, how to operate, or where to go apart from the light of His guidance.
I use to tell the students at Hume Lake that God's word is a lamp unto our feet—not the spotlight ten miles down the road. He leads us not mile by mile but step by step. When Jesus says "I am the light of the world," He follows it immediately with "he who follows me will not walk in darkness." To "follow" isn't passive observation - it means your life goes where His light leads.
How does God guide us?
Once again, Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." God's Word is the guide for the people of God. This is how He leads us today—not through pillars of cloud and fire, but through the illumination of Scripture by the Holy Spirit.
Every single day you wake up, you have a choice: Will I follow the Light today, or will I trust my own understanding? Will I submit to His guidance, or will I chart my own course? The Israelites who tried to move without the pillar ended up lost, vulnerable, and in danger. The same is true for us.
1. What major decisions are you facing right now where you need God's guidance?
2. Are there areas of your life where you're moving ahead without waiting for God's direction?
3. How consistently are you seeking God's guidance through His Word and prayer?
Stay dialed in.
