"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing."
Nothing. Not a little. Nothing.

"Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me."
"Work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure."
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."
Eleven times in eleven verses in John 15, Jesus uses the word remain. Abide. Stay with Me. That is not an accident.
The believer's responsibility is to abide. What does that mean? It means we remain close to Jesus. It means we live in constant dependence on Him. All Christian growth is organic growth—something God brings about as we live near to Him.
Jesus says, "You are the branches." By the way—you're not a trunk. You're not an oak tree. Jesus says we are smoldering wicks, bruised reeds (Matthew 12:20). And unless we are connected to the vine, He says, "Apart from Me you can do nothing."
What does that mean? It doesn't mean you can't play Christian. A lot of people have done that. A lot of people have written Christian books, preached sermons, lived the Christian life thinking they could do it on their own.
When He says, "Apart from Me you can do nothing"—He means you can bear no actual fruit. You can play the game. But you cannot bear fruit unless you're abiding in the vine.
Philippians 2:12-13 says, "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in and through you to will and to work for His good pleasure." We work—but it is God working in and through us.
Can I just ask you a question? Could it be that part of the reason you see such little growth in your life is because you think you're a vine and not a bruised branch?
You think the power is in you. You think the life comes from you. And Jesus says, "No—apart from Me, you can do nothing." The branch does not generate life. It receives it from the vine. The only job of the branch is to stay connected.
Stay close. Abide. Remain. And the fruit will come—because fruit is what happens when a branch stays in the vine.
1. Are you trying to bear fruit through your own effort and discipline, or through dependence on Christ?
2. What does it look like practically for you to abide in Christ this week—in your prayer life, your time in the Word, your fellowship with His people?
3. Where in your life are you acting like the vine instead of the branch—relying on your own strength rather than His?
